7‑Second Head Start: Cutting Pedestrian Injuries by One‑Third

A Columbia University study of over 6,000 New York City intersections found that giving pedestrians a 7 to 11‑second “head start” at traffic lights, also known as Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), resulted in 33% fewer pedestrian injuries overall and a 65% reduction in fatal crashes during daylight hours.

This simple, low‑cost timing adjustment significantly improves pedestrian visibility at crossings and is both scalable and highly effective.
